Establishing Your Foundation


You’re brand new to needlepoint — or returning after a bit of a break. You’re curious, inspired, and ready to dive in, but sometimes it feels overwhelming to figure out where to start. You love all the pretty canvases and threads, but you’re not sure if you’re “doing it right.”

✔ Learning (or practicing) the three variations of tent stitches: half-cross, continental, and basketweave.

✔ Practicing how to begin and end threads correctly (inline waste knot, away waste knot, weaving in ends).

✔ Learning to read and work from simple stitch charts/diagrams.

✔ Building confidence with materials, tools, and techniques.

✔ Overcoming nerves about being new (or rusty!) and finding your footing again.

You’ll know you’re growing as a stitcher when you can…

 

✔ Thread a needle and tie a knot with ease.

✔ Properly mount a canvas on stretcher bars or a scroll frame.

✔ Begin and end a thread using correct methods.

✔ Competently work all 3 variations of the tent stitch (half-cross, continental, diagonal/basketweave).

âś” Read and follow simple charts and diagrams.

To move into the Turquoise Thread Stage, you'll need to complete these action items:

✔ Complete three small projects (around 4” ornament size); at least one must be basketweave.

✔ Begin a Stitch Reference Notebook with samples of all 3 variations of the tent stitch: half-cross, continental, and diagonal tent.

✔ Practice the White Thread stitches and add them to your Stitch Reference Notebook.

✔ Take the Understanding Color MasterClass to strengthen your foundation.

✔ Complete the Needlepoint Made Easy™ course. (Recommended)
